The Ecuador Chronicles - 2009-005

Hungry in Quito;
              There are a Lot of Options;
                           Try the Mercado Central

The Mercado Central de Quito, located in the Old Town, has a vast array of Ecuador produced fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, herbs, spices and flowers.  It is noted as "Primer Mercado Saludable" - Formost Healthful Market.  The Quito Central Market has won awards for cleanliness.

Quality, Cordiality and Convenience - It is True

There are so many types of fruits:  Bananas of all descriptions, Oranges, Pineapple, Mango, Papaya, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Grapes, Apples, Strawberrys, Passion Fruit, Star Fruit, Blackberrys, and many more whose names I do not know.

Visiting Quito - Take Some Fruit Back to the Hotel for a Snack

There is every kind of meat:  Beef, Pork, Lamb, Chicken, Sausage.

Fresh Meat

And Chicken

The Sausage Looks Good - But I Agree with that Old English Saying:
"Sausage is More Enjoyable if You Don't Give Thought to How it is Made"

Potatoes are of course native to South America - there are so many types; even the french fries taste better in Quito.

Potatoes on Display - and maybe some Yucca

Fresh seafood and shellfish from the Pacific Coast are always available, also fresh Tilapia.  Shrimp and Tilapia are both major export products for Ecuador.

Fresh Fish and Shrimp - The Price is Right

And Don't Forget to check out the
Vegetables, Herbs, Spices and Flowers

Veggies and Herbs

Fresh flowers are also a major export product for Ecuador; many of the fresh flowers on sale at your local Kroger of Publix are from Ecuador - take a look at the label.

Roses - Recently a Dollar a Dozen

If it is fresh, and grown in Ecuador you will more than likely find it at the Mercado Central de Quito.  There is even a restaurant - hot meals about $1.50.  Visit the market when you come to Quito.
